Working Together Health Foundation (WTHF) hosts health awareness campaign and distributes food items

... to less privilege women of society in partnership with Rotary Club of Lagos Island

Working Together Health Foundation played host in partnership with Rotary Club of Lagos Island on Thursday, to 210 women in Ikota, Ajah area of Lagos, when the WTHF had its free cervical breast cancer awareness programe that took place at the Apostolic Church Power House Assembly.

The programme ensured that the participants registered a day earlier before the main programme, and had in attendance, medical experts from the Rotary Club of Lagos Island and other members of the club.

The programme which featured a medical lecture which successfully educated the women on cervical breast cancer, prevention and what to do when the cancer is already in the body, had the women asking various questions to gain as much personal understanding as possible.

Speaking later to newsmen, Rotarian Chief Anil Grover, the Chairman, Health Services of the Club, enumerated reasons for the kind gesture offered the Ikota community. “We gave them awareness education on what is called cervical cancer, breast cancer, how it happens, and how it can be prevented.

Rotarian Chief Anil Grover went further to say that he is happy that the free cervical breast cancer awareness programe was a success: “I am happy about this particular programme because it went very well. It was organized with the collaboration of the Apostolic Church in Ikota. They ensured that the sitting arrangement took into consideration the social distancing factor, and there was adequate crowd management. All precautions were taken and the siting arrangement had one metre distance apart. And for those who already have cancer, we told them how they can endure it and how the club can help them too.”

On her part, Rotarian Francesca Robinson, the founder and chairperson of WTHF and member of the Health Services Committee of RCLI told us that, Rotary Club of Lagos Island is known to support less privileged communities with humanitarian services, “and this is one of the type of outreaches that we hold to carry out our support and training where need be. We do this once every three months but we have other programmes too that we do once every month. With this awareness, we are hoping that lesser numbers will fall victim. And knowing that the pandemic is still on, and a lot of people are affected, especially low income earners, we gave each family, bags of food items, rice, oil and water to take back home.that can at least last them for a week.

Asked if the club members were not unduly exposing themselves to possible contact of covid-19, Rotarian Chief Anil Grover responded, “Somebody has to risk when you are doing community service. As a healthcare practitioner, a doctor, we are always treating people every day. So it is just natural that as care givers or care workers, we have to put our lives on the line to save the community, save the society and save humanity.”
