... as Government seals off church building
By Grace Akpan in Uyo
The Akwa Ibom State Government today, Sunday June 21, ordered immediate closure of Christ Embassy Church building along Nung Akpa Ime, off Nsikak Eduok Avenue in Uyo, the State capital.
A release by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem, revealed that the seal-off of the church building followed the disruption, attack and brutality by some pastors and members of the church on the state monitoring team on compliance with the guidelines for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 as adopted by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
The monitoring team members who were on routine monitoring exercise for Uyo Capital city, led by Prince Enobong Uwah arrived the Church about 11am after going round other Churches only to meet over six able bodied men blocking the entrance to the church which gate was locked with padlock, while ordering the monitoring team to leave.
All efforts by Prince Uwah, the state chairman of CAN, Rev. Dr. Ndueso Ekwerre, Dr Stella Udoh and other representatives of security agencies to gain access into the church premises proved abortive.
In response to the act of lawlessness by the Church, and in order to avoid the risk of community transmission of COVID-19 in Akwa Ibom State, the Christ Embassy Church building and premises had to be sealed off till further notice.
The suspected Pastors and relevant members of the church will be made to face the wrath of the law, the release added.
