Bose Olubo Adegeye celebrates her grandfather on Fathers' Day

Fabunmi Oloogunde

Chief Emmanuel Dada Fabunmi, my grandfather, Oloogunde Obalu of Efon Kingdom, Oko Eye Alate, a visit to him made the difference in my life as I decided to stay back in Efon, I enjoyed the few years spent going almost everywhere with him, He taught me ijinle Efon language, Oloogunde Eye, Ajagajigi, Fabunmi Abe, Amori Eshin Godongbo... Continue to rest.

Emmanuel Oladesu has this to say:

Bose Olubo Adegeye

I remember Ologunde Fabunmi, who I think, succeeded Ologunde Ajaga. In the days of war, the Ologunde of yore used to lead other "ologun gbadajos" and other men of valour to war expeditions. Fabunmi stood out because of his little western education, and this factor reflected in the upbringing of his children from various wives. His children are educated and famous like him. Tall and dignified, he was already an old man when we were in primary school. Bespectacled, he usually went to Ajo Obalu at Akodi Obaloja. He held a walking stick. He used to dress well like the late Saba Folayan, Chief Agemo of Imoba/Imorere and Obaloja Omoyeye Odeosunlasoore. I used to be fascinated by the movement of these chiefs while going to and returning from Akodi, popularly called "Ile Ogboni." Many of them used umbrellas as walking sticks. People will be greeting them: "Ebo afin aba."

I think Fabunmi died around 1980, a year after the demise of one of his wife, Faaji Mother Ore, daughter of Obaloja Gold Adekahunsi, son of Arowolo.

Fabunmi was succeeded by Principal, Barrister, Hon. Oke, who was succeeded by banker and politician Afolabi Olasope, son of Ajalemo and former president of Efon Improvement League.

It appears the chieftaincy title of Ologunde Obalu, which is not honorary, is also not hereditary. I think it is conferred on a man of note in Obalu Quarter.

I look forward to that time when our father, Obaloja Pariola, will assemble Obalu leaders and elders to write the history of the quarter for the instruction of the younger generation, and for posterity.

May the soul of Fabunmi continue to rest in perfect peace.
