ABUJA: Democracy Day Clash Between Pro-Democracy Group And Protesters

... As Pro-Democracy Group Calls For Unity, Youth Dev. Commission

By Our Reporter

There was a huge turnout of demonstrators in Abuja, the Nation's capital territory today, as Nigeria celebrates Democracy day.

While a Pro-Democracy Day rally was going on as members of Emerging Leaders Forum of Nigeria (ELFON) in company of groups like National youth council, Youth Assembly of Nigeria, National Association of Nigerian Students, National Association of Polytechnic Students, Nigerian Students Parliament, Arewa youth council, and so on at the early hours of today from Gudu Area of Abuja heading towards the central business area with banners and placards calling for a better United Nigeria, a clash was recorded as there was a face to face confrontation between the Pro-Democracy Day group and a group of protesters having placards demanding an end to bad governance in the country, and seeking "Buhari Must Go" as part of activities marking the June 12 democracy day along Gudu road.

The protesting group was reported to have occupied a section of the road before the arrival of the over populated Pro-Democracy group numbering over one thousand five hundred members who chased the protesters off the road as passerby witnessed the drama where protesters scampered for safety with some sustaining injuries.

However, our reporter confirmed that the police were on ground to ensure safety of lives and properties.

Speaking to journalists, the National President of Emerging Leaders Forum of Nigeria (ELFON), who led the Pro-Democracy Day Rally, Amb. Godstime Chukwubuikem Samuel said Nigerians must come together to talk about things that unites us as a country, not such that divides us as a people.

"As young progressives and stakeholders in nation building, we will not tolerate any unruly act from hired miscreants coming to demonstrate against our Nation's Unity, Progress and Development", Godstime warned.

The ELFON leader expressed their gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for approving June 12 as Democracy day which he noted has gone a long way to reawaken the our commitment of citizens to a United Nigeria where Equity, Fairplay, Justice must be taken serious for a better Nigeria.

"We urge President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint young Nigerians who are bellow forty years of age as Ministers of State and also establish a National Commission for Youth Development which will go a long way in addressing unemployment in Nigeria," He further stated.

As at the time of filing this report, the ELFON- Project Unity Nigeria Group were seen heading towards the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
