Prostitutes, otherwise called sex workers or commercial sex workers, have exposed the harsh economic state of things in Zimbabwe, an African country.
The sex workers who were attending a Key Affected Populations (KAP) workshop meant to find ways of reducing HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), convened by the National Aids Council (NAC) at Dema Growth Point, were interviewed by a local publication and some of them spilled their heart troubles to the press.
Alice, a sex worker, said: “Gone are the days when we used to charge US$5 for the whole night. These days even one dollar is accepted, so that you are able to buy vegetables and tomatoes and cook something for your starving children.”
She furthermore disclosed that she has 3 children, one of which is in Form 4. The child needs ZIMSEC (Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council) registration fees while the other kids are in Grade 7 and Grade One.
“I now even accept a bucket of maize or cups of dried beans as payment for sex services. At least I am assured that my kids will have porridge,” she added.
While another sex worker who only identified herself as Mavis, said she could have opted to be a house helper. She however said locals don’t pay.
The Guardian Uk, in its international edition today, under the article 'Anger in Zimbabwe at Nehanda statue amid collapsing economy' stated that:
"After successive lockdowns in Zimbabwe during the pandemic, life has become unbearable for ordinary people working in the informal sector. The deteriorating economy has further crippled a health sector under the additional strain of Covid."
