Akwa Ibom State Students in tertiary institutions will soon enjoy government scholarships across board a situation which will go a long way to lighten the burden for parents funding their children or wards' education.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong made this known, Tuesday 12th January, 2021, while briefing Government House Correspondents at the end of the State Executive Council, SEC, meeting.
According to Comrade Ini Ememobong, Governor Udom Emmanuel who presided over the SEC meeting, directed the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, to put up modalities for the institution of scholarship awards to all Akwa Ibom students in tertiary institutions, by liaising with critical stakeholders for actualization of the scheme.
This development according to the State Information
helmsman is part of government's efforts toward boosting education, as
the sector tops the priority list of Akwa Ibom State government in 2021.
The State Spokesman further disclosed that SEC also
approved the Environmental Beautification Policy, as presented by the
Commissioner for Environment, Sir Charles Udoh. Ememobong who said, the policy
is geared at promoting the beautification of the state, added that, Council
charged the Commissioner of Environment to expedite implementation.
"We also received the environmental beautification policy which was approved and the Commissioner for Environment was charged with the task of speedy implementation, for a beautiful environment, so we can maintain our position as Nigeria’s cleanest state".
Still on beautification of the environment, Comrade
Ememobong stated that, the Executive Council has also directed on the
remodeling of Ibom Plaza to enhance the ambience of the heart of Uyo capital
city.
Further more, State government has directed the
immediate disbursement of funds to contractors handling major projects in the
state to ensure early work completion. The directive which was part of the
resolutions of SEC is also aimed at
stimulating the state economy.
To this end, Government has approved the the injection
of N50 billion into the system for the purpose in the first quarter of the
year.
"The Executive Council has directed the immediate
disbursement of funds for major contractors. I am sure you have seen that work
has begun in earnest at all the major construction sites not just in Uyo, in
Eket and many other places. Work is currently ongoing and Exco is conscious of
His Excellency’s promise to stimulate the economy and ensure the completion of
projects", the Information Commissioner stated.
"The most important thing is that the contractors
have resumed fully from their Christmas vacation and they are doubling efforts
to complete the projects as we cannot lose this dry season", Comrade
Ememobong added.
He hinted that the Council also granted approval for
the award and commencement of Inter- Ministerial Direct Labour Projects and
mandated Exco members to ensure that the projects are speedily and
qualitatively delivered.
"...also Inter-ministerial jobs will be awarded
and His Excellency as Chairman in council has directed the speedy award and
monitoring of those inter-ministerial jobs", Ememobong stated.
He disclosed that it was the resolution of
Council to restructure the Akwa Ibom Property and Investments Company Limited
(APICO) for efficient and effective service delivery, while Akwa Palms Limited
has been earmarked for reactivation.
Speaking further, the Commissioner said, the Chairman
in Council also directed a panel to visit and interface with the management of
Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU, to find solutions to issues raised by Labour
Union of the school.
The Council also took out time to observe a
minute silence for the departed former member of EXCO, the immediate past
Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, Arc. Ime Ekpo, whose death was
mentioned at the meeting.
