The Indian Community in Nigeria has defied the onslaught of Covid-19, and gone ahead to show the milk of human kindness by distributing food to the needy in different parts of Lagos where a larger number of the Indians live in Nigeria.
And no sooner that a possible lockdown was announced in March, the Indian Community, started to reach out to the needy.
According to the representatives of Indian Community, "in view of the situations arising out of the lockdown as a result of Covid-19, the Indian Community felt it necessary to start distributing the food packets to the vulnerable residents of Lagos and its environs."
The Indian community's concern, was more particularly, for the "many daily wage people, many small time traders who had stopped getting the business and likewise many other needy people who did not have support for their daily bread. We reached out to them to distribute food packets to support them."
The distribution exercise we hear, started in the last week of March 2020 and is still going on.
"So far we have distributed 28,500 food packets consisting of rice, Indomie noodles, Geisha Fish, Cereals, beans and so on. Roughly we have crossed distributing 62,000 kgs. of rice, 33,000 packets of Indomie noodles, 5,000 kgs of beans, Geisha Fish, Cereals and other basic food items.
"We still feel that we should continue with this project to reach out to as many needy people as may be possible."
We also confirmed that the food distribution has been on behalf of the entire Indian Community in Nigeria, and this project is being administered and managed by GEETA ASHRAM NIGERIA, INDIAN CULTURAL ASSOCIATION & JHULELAL SINDHI SAMAJ CHARITY TRUST.
