The humanitarian efforts of the Indian community in Lagos which we have found out commenced as early as March 2020, would have gone totally unnoticed until we stumbled on some of the many words of appreciation sent to Chief Sanjay Jain, the President of the Indian Cultural Association, Nigeria, by different beneficiaries of their kind gestures.
Prior to the commencement of total lockdown of Lagos State, Ogun and Abuja, Chief Sanjay Jain told us that the Indian Community had put in place a project tagged: Distribution of Food Packets to Needing Communities.
According to him, "in view of the situation that was to arise out of the Lockdown as a result of Covid-19, the Indian Community felt it necessary to start distributing the food packets to the vulnerable residents of Lagos and its environs. There were many daily wage people, many small time traders who had stopped getting the business and likewise many other needy people who did not have support for their daily bread. We reached out to them to distribute food packets to support them."
He told us that the actual distribution started in the last week of March 2020 and is still going on.
So far the Indian community have on record to have distributed a total of 21,450 food packets consisting of rice, Indomie noodles, beans, Geisha Fish, Cereals and other basic food items.
Ranging from 55,000 kgs. of rice, 24,000 packets of indomie noodles, beans and so on.
Chief Sanjay Jain commended his fellow Indians for heeding the clarion call to save and assist humanity. He reiterated that in view of the continuity of the lockdown, "we feel that we should continue with this project to reach out to as many needy people as may be possible."
