A Third Republic Senator, Anthony Adefuye has expressed
concern over how the outbreak of the dreaded Coronavirus is being handled in
the country.
Adefuye argued that Nigerians, who have likely died in
the wake of the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country due to fear, has
far exceeded those killed by the virus itself.
He, therefore, called for a careful management of
the pandemic, to stem the tide of what he called premature
death-induced carnage due to fear.
Adefuye who is the Olugbon of Lagos and Sobaloju of the
Source (Ife), further contended that the affliction of the high and the mighty
across the world, further heightened fear in the minds of the people.
"There is urgent need to combat fear,” he said and
continued, “Right now; doctors are running away from hospitals because of fear!
While no efforts must be spared in managing the Coronavirus pandemic, such
efforts must be devoid of fear," he said.
The call by the senator is also against the background
that few days ago, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) warned
Nigerians against resorting to self-treatment or succumbing to the use of
chloroquine, an anti-malaria drug, out of outright fear to prevent or treat
coronavirus (COVID-19) infection.
It will be recalled that Nigerians upon the verbal
assurance gained from a speech made by the United States of America
president, Donald Trump, which mentioned that chloroquine could come handy
against coronavirus, went in search of the previously banned drug, while some
actually found it, used it and ended up in hospitals.
“Fear shouldn’t be our driving force,” reiterated the
senator, “instead proper enlightenment which will disarm fear should be
employed to all nooks and crannies of the nation.”
Concern from good and well-meaning Nigerians has also arisen
about the swiftness at which chloroquine a hitherto banned drug, has all of a
sudden, reared up its head at many pharmaceuticals and freely and easily sold
to the public over the counter.
