The recent disqualification of Nigeria's first-ever film
submission in the Oscars have thrown confusion and sadness into the entire
industry as a blanket mood enveloped the reaction of most of those we spoke to on
the issue.
Genevieve Nnaji’s Lionheart got disqualified in the Best
International Feature Film category, on the basis that it is largely in
English, which makes it ineligible to compete in that category.
The Academy disqualified Nigeria’s “Lionheart” from
the Oscar race in the Best International Feature Film category, which hitherto had
a record number of films of 93 entries but presently has 92 films competing for
the award.
Some respondents said, “it is not a funny matter at
all.”
But whether it is funny or not, the reality is that
Lionheart has been disqualified.
However, Genevieve Nnaji’s film has set a record to be
the first ever Nigerian film that has been submitted for the Oscars.
