It
was a private party few days ago, to celebrate the man in the centre of Freedom
Park in Lagos, Architect Theo Lawson as he turned 60. Art enthusiasts, friends,
business partners and cronies were all there to wish the man who found Yeni
Kuti’s heart, a happy birthday.
Theo Lawson a quiet gentleman whose passion for the
arts knows no caution was in a happy mood as he saw his inlaws the Kuti family
serenade in him in celebration. Not one for loud publicity, the private party,
was not loudly publicized: but the party was grand enough, for those who
attended.
A close friend of his described him as a
‘refined, cultured gentleman who transformed Freedom Park on Broad Street,
Lagos to Nigeria’s most vibrant arts space in barely seven years.’
