WHO ARE THOSE WITHIN YOUR CIRCLE?

By Zoe Oluwabusayo

There is a popular picture that has been circulating on social media for quite a while now and I believe a few would have seen it.

It’s the picture of two of the world’s richest men, the C.E.O of Microsoft, Bill Gate and the C.E.O of Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett.

The picture depicts a whole lot of meanings for those who understand the value of networking and the worth of friendship. Simply put, you are a reflection of the people you walk and talk with.

The people within your circle, that is, the people you walk and talk constantly with, people whom you call your friends, determines who you will become, as you cannot rise above the level of those in whose company you are in.

If you desire to become the best in whatever you do, if you desire to become the best of who you are, you must walk with those who are better than you. You must listen to those who are wiser than you and you must talk with those who have achieved that which you desire.

You can’t be in the midst of those who are not making conscious efforts to improve on their lives and expect that your life would be different, better than theirs. You are actually a sum total of those you walk and talk with, you are the make-up of those who are close to you.

As a career professional, entrepreneur, student or teenager, you must make conscious and deliberate decisions to choose those with whom you spend time with on a consistent basis.

Look at those you constantly connect with and ask yourself these questions:

- Do I want my future self to be like the present self of my friends?
- Can I proudly say that my association with my friends is helping me fulfill my goals and objections?
- What do I gain whenever I am in the presence of my friends?
- Do I always feel rejuvenated or empty after talking with my friends?
- What exactly are my friends doing to move their lives forward?

If the answers to all these questions are in the negative, then, you’ve got to change your circle of friends and get new ones who will add value to you as you add value to them as well.

Look for people around you who are living admirable and purposeful lives and get close to them. If you cannot find anyone like that around you, look for not-for-profit organizations or credible faith based institutions that you can join and become part of them, volunteering for work therein. When you do this, you will meet people with the same internal drive as you, living out their daily lives in a deliberate and conscious way to achieve a foreseeable and successful future.

In a proverbial manner, “you can’t walk with chickens and expect to fly like an eagle”. In the same vein, you do not walk with those who do not pattern their lives in a conscious deliberate manner for a specific end and expect that you won’t turn out the same.

Examine those within your circle, people that you consistently talk and walk with; what you foresee for them is what you will become.

Be very deliberate about those whom you walk closely with, remember, the friend of a billionaire will most likely become a billionaire because of the ideas that will be exchanged between them, likewise, the friend of a person who is lackadaisical about his life will most certainly end up that way.

Be very deliberate about those who are within your circle.
