ILUPEJU DIAMOND LIONS CLUB HOSTS FRSC SECTOR COMMANDER

Last Sunday was special in the lives of the members of Ilupeju Diamond Lions Club. And that is because, it was the Club’s last meeting day in year 2017.

So, the Club thought it best to play host to the Sector Commander of The Federal Road Safety Corps, Commander Oneje Hyginus, who came prepared with a well packed lecture titled:  Road traffic accident Vs Road traffic crash, to coincide with the yuletide season and the multiple travels experienced during this season.

Commander Oneje Hyginus while delivering his lecture commended the humanitarian efforts of the club over the past years, and particularly, the club’s societal community impact throughout the Presidency of the incumbent Mrs. Olatundun Omosaiye. Afterwards, the Sector Commander went on to define road accidents and road traffic crash.

According to him, road accidents are predictable and preventable and always have a cause. Road crashes are a major health problem. Road crashes are relatively 90% of road traffic movement higher than flying which is only 5%.

He maintained that road crashes can be prevented with focus on safer road use, safer vehicles and better management, through maintenance and rehabilitation.

He also made the members of the club to know that, both good and bad roads can cause accidents because some drivers move too fast.
He urged the members to avoid road accidents by preventing such through the rein enforcement of use of seat belts, the improvement of driving culture, quick emergency response, and consistent government policy.

Road accidents he said, could also be avoided through greater effect on culture and attitude on drivers and stake holders by education and enlightenment. Drivers should maintain safety standards, maintain vehicles, check tyres for expiration dates, gauge them correctly 30/30, rotate good tyres to the back not the front, and always remember that the environment is not designed to forgive mistakes but for action and response.

The Sector Commander concluded that, motorists should be defensive drivers, and always remember that there is no specific time to reach any destination, that best speed at any given time is common sense and every accident or crash is as a result of somebody’s disobedience.
