Calabar Carnival 2022 Bloodbath: 14 dead, 29 critically injured in bikers parade

For a hurriedly and late planned Calabar carnival 2022, a gruesome accident has marred the erstwhile known happy carnival that usually heralds the end of the year in Calabar!

Initially, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), late Tuesday, 7 persons were confirmed dead while 29 others were injured in the tragic incident which occured during the Bikers parade.

However, much later, the state police confirmed 14 dead from the accident which was caused by a drunk driver, in front of a Mosque in Bogobiri along Mary Slessor during the Bikers Carnival.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC is said to have disclosed that the number of injured persons involved in the accident were 21 male adults, three women, two male children and three female children and confirmed that the injured were rushed to Naval hospital and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, and General Hospital for immediate attention.

Gov Ben Ayade has condoled with families of those who lost their lives and promised to bring to book the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident.

Some tourism pundits in Nigeria however berates the fact that this year's carnival was hurriedly planned, because, as at last month November, the government did not have a clear-cut intention about the hosting of this year's carnival, while that of last year which was equally hurriedly conceived, was shelved and postponed.

In time past, where successful carnival were held in the state, careful early planning, which commenced months before December, were the order of the day.

They urge the government to take planning as an important aspect of a carnival seriously.
