KANO: The Insolent Meets The Unthinkable - By Louis Odion, FNGE

It is perhaps a measure of the ethical pestilence ravaging the land today that Cecilia Ibru too has suddenly recovered her voice to rail and rant against beleaguered Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the mercurial but gravely flawed emir of Kano.

Breaking a decade silence in a Punch interview at the weekend, the grandma once glorified as the "Amazon" of the nation's banking world, would have us believe that she fell on SLS's sword in 2009 because the then Central Bank governor saw her as "threat" to his job.

THOUGH THE CIVIL WAR DISTORTED OUR LIVES, IT DIDN'T CHANGE MY STYLE

- ANTHONY RAYMOND NJOKU (Son of First Republic Minister)

Their's was a fab life growing up in Nigeria in the early days of Nigeria's independence. Ikoyi where his family lived was strictly reserved for the colonial masters and quite a few like the Njoku's who were privileged to have the head of their nuclear family at the helms of polical affairs in the country.
But things changed after the civil war and in this interview with Paul Ukpabio, Businessman/Property Developer, Anthony Njoku who is also the son of First Republic Minister of Transport, Raymond Amanze Njoku re-visits the changing lifestyle of that period.

What can you say about your early years?
I was born in England in 1955, I came back as a baby. I attended Corona School but when my father noticed that I was lagging in my religious studies, I was transferred to St Mary’s school on Broad Street, Lagos. I grew up in Ikoyi. I am the son of Raymond Njoku who was a Minister in the first republic. He served in the cabinet from 1958 to 1966 when the crisis began.

FOR FIRST BANK OF NIGERIA, 125 YEARS IS NOT JUST A NUMBER

– By Bashorun J. K. Randle

The combination of One plus Two and Five – making eight has significant implications amongst magicians, tarot card readers, fortune tellers, snake charmers and Pentecostal preachers of prosperity, who insist that it is supercharged with spiritual dimensions. Regardless, we must abandon metaphysics and concentrate instead on heartily congratulating our nation’s oldest bank on its 125th Anniversary.

It comes at a price – to remain silent or to rewind the tape going back to its conception; impregnation; midwifery and deliverance at the inaugural meeting of shareholders at the Colony Hotel, London in 1894.

LEGALITY OF MARIJUANA IN NIGERIA: A LEGAL OPINION -Kayode Ajulo, PhD

Abstract

In the recent times, there have been calls from different quarters on the need to legalize the use of Marijuana in Nigeria. This legal opinion considers the mischief behind the laws proscribing the production, possession, sale and use of Marijuana and thereafter considers the benefits of legalizing Marijuana in Nigeria.

Introduction

Classified as an illicit drug in many countries, marijuana is outlawed by many governments. In Nigeria, it is often referred to as ‘Indian hemp’, in the country, Cannabis Sativa, which has enjoyed use as fibre, seed and seed oils, medicinal purposes, and as a recreational drug traces its origin to Central and South Asia. The drug also has many other aliases igbo, dope, ganja, sensi, kuma, morocco, eja, kpoli, weed, trees, etc. Though usually smoked, the plant can be soaked in alcoholic drinks dubbed ‘monkey-tail’, and consumed mostly in the south-south parts of the country. Some people cook food with it, some boil it to drink as tea, while others just chew the plant and seeds.

TRAVEL BUSINESS IS STRESSFUL, BUT I STILL PREFER IT TO BANKING

-  Bankole Bernard (NANTA President)

Bankole Bernard is the National President of National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA). A role he assumed in 2016. He worked in the banking industry for eight years in various banks such as EcoBank, Metropolitan Bank now United Bank for Africa, and left in 2006 as a Branch Manager for First Atlantic Bank (FinBank).

Bankole Bernard is the Founder and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Finchglow Travels Limited/FCm Nigeria. He with the support of other directors founded the company in 2006 after leaving behind his banking career.

His company Finchglow Travels is named in the top 3 amongst about 1500 registered travel agencies/travel management companies in Nigeria with sales volume of 10 billion naira annually.

He is also the Chairman of Travelden Nigeria Limited, an online Travel portal and Southoak Aviation Services, Lagos Aviation Academy, Finchglow Holidays and Prysm Investments.
As a socialite he works just as much as he enjoys himself. He believes a balanced life makes a healthy body. He shares his lifestyle with us in this interview with Paul Ukpabio.

What would you say is the greatest achievement so far for NANTA?
Recently, we had our 43rd Annual General meeting. To the best of my knowledge, this was the best AGM we have had in recent times. Ever since I took over in 2016, I have been pushing the bar so that the general public and the stakeholders in the industry can understand what NANTA is about and who the members are. We contribute to the growth of the GDP of this country, yet we are given little recognition because NANTA as a body had not done much in terms of awareness in the past. So when I took over, I realized that an association that has been around for over thirty years and was least known even within the people in the industry, meant that a lot needed to be done about awareness. So in 2016, we embarked on awareness campaign, built a website, created social media accounts, restructured the secretariat and worked through the zones. Now all that has been actualized! One other thing that I will like to say that we have achieved is that our advocacy has yielded results to the point that people are now aware that there is an association in the travel and tourism industry that is known as NANTA and it is functioning well.

NIGERIA GOVERNOR'S WIVES FORUM DONATES TO IDPs IN ZAMFARA STATE

GOV. AMBODE BAGS INTERNATIONAL AWARD

National Image International Magazine, a top-notch media, famed for promoting good governance and sustainable development, in collaboration with various allied organisations, has conferred on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, the Best Performing Governor in Nigeria award for his performance during his administration 2015 – 2019.

The award was presented to the governor, at the special farewell Photo Exhibition on Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode Achievements, in Lagos, today.

At the event, The Head International Correspondent  of the organization, Paul Smith, said the meritorious award is in recognition of Governor Ambode’s “ground-breaking performance as the foremost Nigerian governor with the largest number of road projects, youth empowerment, skill acquisition, infrastructure development, small and medium scale industry empowerments for indigenes of the state, as well as promotion of peace and security and human capital development, which have altogether created prosperity for all Lagoasians within the record time of virtually 4 years that Governor Ambode has been in office.

Smith also stated that the decision to confer on Ambode with “this well deserving award was taken after extensive research to see what all the governors in the 36 states have done in the past three and a half years, in five major areas, namely: infrastructure development, human capital development, promotion of peace and security, as well as nearness to the grassroots people, and execution of people-oriented social service programmes that directly impact on the land and lives of people in each state.

He also reiterated that, “the award is in recognition of Governor Ambode as the governor with the highest number of infrastructure development projects in Lagos state.

“Governor Ambode is the foremost governor in terms of being the governor who most frequently visits project fields, completing major projects as well as kick-starting grassroot links roads, inspecting and commissioning new projects, with President Mohammad Buhari visiting some of the projects recently; thereby, creating comfort and prosperity for Lagosians through his 'SMART' administration.”

Mr, Seyi Bamigbade, a Consultant and Politian who received the meritorious award on behalf of Governor Ambode, who was inevitably attending to other important state functions, said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has laid a good legacy for other upcoming Governors to build on.

“Lagos as the fifth largest economy in Africa, can be likened to a country. With the momentum which Gov. Ambode has put in place, Lagos might soon emerge as the biggest economy in Africa. It is home to almost every religion, tribe and colour and accommodates the largest pool of black people all over the world, including Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who is from Nigeria and has a home in Lagos,” he said.

Seyi thanked the participants for finding time to honour the occasion. He said that the Idea of the Photo Exhibition in appreciating the effort of the Governor for his good governance and achievements in impacting on the African continent, is commendable

“We have to connect, escalate and cultivate both intra and inter African interests and connection, continue discussion and conversation on good governance. I will make sure the plaque get's to the Governor," he promised.
