The President, Ilupeju Diamonds Lions Club, Lagos, Mrs Olatundun Omoshaye,
has urged government to improve the educational sector for the benefit of the
present and upcoming generation. She also lamented the dwindling
reading culture among students.
While presenting books to students of Ilupeju secondary
school as part of literary campaign marking the district’s 20thanniversary,
Olatundun said the advent of technology has made students lazy when it comes to
reading.
The causes for bad reading culture among students are
numerous. Today, parents buy the most sophisticated phones for their children
which make them to spend more time with it than reading. Also non-availability
of books from government to students also is the cause. The children
are not being properly directed. This is the reason government needs
to encourage children to read and improved the educational sector,” she said.
She added: “So we need to bring it to their awareness that
they need to read more and it’s better to start with them at this stage. That’s
why we presented them with books.
Mrs Omoshaye further said the campaign was part of the Lions
club programme to support the community.
“It’s part of Lions international to support the community.
The idea is to encourage reading culture among students. The suppose is to
broaden their mind and scope and thinking and encourage them to read more so
they can discover more about life. We chose Ilupeju secondary school because we
are Ilupeju Diamond Lions Club read a book, and it’s required we support the
community where we picked our name.
We are going to take it to other schools outside Ilupeju. To
monitor these students, we have told them they must all have exercise books
because we are going to number the books we give to them. Whenever they read,
they must go to their exercise books and write down whatever they learnt from
it so it can be a point of reference for them,” she said.
