Oba Akiolu calls for effective maritime security applauds security, commends  AIG Kastina's appointment

The Oba of Lagos has called on the Federal government to give more support to maritime security in view of its strategic position in the Nigerian economy. Speaking during a courtesy visit to his palace by the new Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police in charge of the Maritime Command, Alhaji Musa Kastina and his Command officers, Oba Akiolu noted that the endemic corruption in the Maritime sector needs a tough, experienced and courageous maritime Police Command to be wiped away, adding that the coming of AIG Kastina is at the ‘‘right time and at the right place’’.

In a press release issued in Lagos by The Public Relations Unit of Marine Police Command, the Oba of Lagos, who had a flourishing police career and retired as AIG in charge of Kogi and Abuja Commands, expressed worries at the high rate of pipe-line vandalisation and other sundry aquatic crime in the country, cautioned that violence in the Niger-Delta region against oil installations is not the best way to go and called for dialogue to resolve any grievance.

He therefore commended the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase for his choice of Musa Kastina as  new AIG Maritime command and prayed that Kastina will help turn around the fortunes of the Maritime Police Command just as he did in all his postings in the past as commissioner of police notably in Kogi and Imo states.

Oba Rilwan Akiolu stated further ‘‘I am happy to have you in my palace and as your former boss, I am pleased with your records in Imo state where you did very well. As the AIG Maritime, am sure will burst the corruption ring in that sector and bring back sanity. Please count on my support any day, anytime”.

Earlier, in his speech, the AIG Maritime Police Command, Alhaji Musa Kastina told the Oba of Lagos that he and his team were at the palace to pay homage to a former boss, and mentor and to seek his blessings in the discharge by their duties to the Maritime industry and Nigeria at large.

AIG Kastina noted; ‘‘Your royal highness, this is my first visit to any organization since I was posted to the Maritime Command and it is so done because you mentored us to where we are today by the grace of God’’ We can assure you that the maritime Police Command will strategically in conjunction with other security agencies, change the security and operational focus of the command and rid the sector of unpleasant security challenges’’.

He further assured the Oba of Lagos that command enforcement strategy would be drawn by fresh templates of crime intelligence and community policing
