Youthful Mayo Makinde, bids for Ohio House of Reps in USA

Mayo Makinde, a community advocate in Columbus, Ohio has announced his candidacy to contest on the platform of the Democrat Party for the Ohio State House of Representatives.
Mayo who is resting his campaign on three pillars of “Access to government; Better jobs; and Commitment to Community,” will face four other party candidates on Tuesday March 15, 2016.
“I believe that there should be three requirements Voters should seek in vetting their political leaders; educational credentials, political campaign experience, and neighborhood/community leadership and advocacy experience,” Mayo stated.
He is currently raising funds to meet a set goal of $50,000 to enable him pursue his campaign to every sector of 25th District where he is contesting to represent.
The Immigrant reproduces the following from his Campaign page: “Mayo Makinde is a community advocate from Columbus, Ohio who attended Marysville High School where he was actively involved in football, wrestling, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the school band. He later transferred to the Columbus Public School system where he attended Eastmoor Academy High School. Mr. Makinde continued to excel and in 1998 he received his diploma. Shortly after high school, Mayo began taking classes at Columbus State Community College. However, he was later recruited by Western Kentucky University to play football. In 2002, Western Kentucky won their first National Championship in the Gateway Conference. Mayo graduated from Western Kentucky in 2004, he received a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies (75% of his studies were geared towards Political Science).
Through the Democratic Party Mayo was hands-on with Democratic campaigns flowing through Franklin County. February 2005, he began volunteering for the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus. It was at this juncture he gained insight and knowledge of the legislative branch and how policies develop from grassroots to becoming a bill. In 2006, he coordinated Barbara Sykes campaign for State Auditor, while assisting the Ohio Democratic Party with the African American Outreach and GOTV campaign.
In 2008, Mayo ran for the 27th Ohio House of Representative seat. Although he didn’t win the seat, he continued his community service. During that year, Mayo was selected to be president of the East Columbus Civic Association, where he partnered with faith based organizations to fight for change and equality.
During his presidency, he was able to negotiate with the City of Columbus to reopen the neighborhood recreation center after being closed for nearly two months. He also organized city wide efforts to clean up the neighborhood while soliciting City Council members to help assist in these community based efforts. Additionally, he partnered with the Columbus Public Safety Department and Neighborhood Pride in their annual ‘National Nights Out’. An event structured around a national call for neighborhood safety, where community leaders and homeowners joined the City’s Public Safety Department in learning new tips to prevent and fight crime.
While maintaining his political agenda, he continued the course of youth mentorship. He joined organizations such as “Simba Nation” a youth mentoring program. In November 2007, the group traveled to Oakland, California for the “The National Gathering of Justice for Youths Conference”; an organization initiated by Harry Belafonte and Danny Glover. He also runs a youth program called “Counseling and Encouraging Minority American Youth” where he teaches young people the pure fundamental skills of better decision making when faced with sex, violence and drugs.
Mayo has continued to seek out opportunities to bring about change through mentorship, advocacy and special event planning. He is indeed a pillar in his community!”
