In Abuja, signs it was a bleak Xmas and probably a more bleak New Year celebration, abounds

By Paul Ukpabio

"It’s a Christmas like no other in the city of Abuja this year 2016," lamented Abdul Gabar, as the recession bit harder by the day. "The streets and roads were devoid of Christmas lights and decorations like in previous years." And while some homes have tried to keep the tradition of Christmas decoration display going, it is obvious according to traders of fireworks and Xmas decorations that, it’s only the upper class that had had time and money for such luxury this year end.

Though I've traveled far and wide, Africa remains my dream place - Lara George

By Paul Ukpabio

Being a member of the defunct sensational all female musical group known as KUSH, was indeed fun for Lara George, but even more fun and most rewarding it became when she rose out of the ashes of KUSH, dropped her debut 'ijoba Oorun' and emerged a successful, multiple award winning gospel artiste afterwards.

Lara George created an intriguing aura of finesse and creativity around her act, which attracted a huge fan base to her over the years and today, she remains one of the few that keeps the gospel musical genre aglow.

In this interview, the singer bares her mind on how she keeps a healthy singing career with the fun of raising a family, amidst the challenges of life in the entertainment industry.

Trip To Nigeria: Oluwabusayo Yusuf- Bello Writes Children Books With a Touristic Niche

Children literature, despite being a vital and foundational base for all literature, is more often than not relegated in Nigeria. It's almost as if the stakeholders of Nigerian literature, consider this genre as an afterthought, rather than the basis of all writing. Like the adage goes

Leadership recruitment: The Adefarasin doctrine

By Louis Odion, FNGE
Lately, the chief priest of the House on the Rock, Pastor Paul Adefarasin, has been championing an advocacy of sorts. Merely professing Christianity, he postulates, is not what prospers a nation. Which explains why most of the supposedly prosperous nations in Asia and the Gulf today are homes to worshippers of faiths other than Christianity.
Instead, Pastor Adefarasin preaches righteousness. Religiosity should not be mistaken for spirituality. Whereas the former births hypocrisy, the latter begets righteousness. So, if Nigeria is under-achieving, the Christian community is, according to the H.O.R pastor, vicariously liable.
His prescription? It is high time true Christians took more than passing interest in partisan politics - right from the street to ward, council, state and national levels; so that "public policies will be determined by the righteous."

Mimiko: Profile in treachery...By Louis Odion

A cartoon published earlier by Punch offers perhaps the most prophetic foreword to the political tragedy that climaxed in Ondo on November 26. Someone in an unconscious state is sketched being hustled away from the shelter of the Iroko (big oak tree) as the Good Samaritan mutters, "struck by lightning".
Indisputably, the Iroko moniker is patent for the brand of politics Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has retailed in Ondo State in the past two decades. The ill-starred vagrant depicted in the cartoon could only be Eyitayo Jegede, a senior advocate he had anointed to succeed him as governor, only to finish poorly in last weekend's polls.

When I made the first baby, some people said we were playing god! -Dr Abayomi Ajayi (IVF Expert)

Dr Abayomi Ajayi
There have been giant breakthroughs like cloning, sex change, heart transplant and many more in medicine in recent times. In Nigeria, Dr Abayomi Ajayi a doctor and gynecologist, with a few of his kind, blazed the trail of IVF babies when he founded Nordica Fertility Centre in 2004.

It was not an easy feat, considering the endemic religious, cultural, and traditional background of the people of Nigeria. A close friend even told him, ‘if I didn’t know you, I would have said you are mad to consider doing this!’ And when the first baby came, some said,

It was not easy finding the right words to frame the topic. I went through several variants ranging from NIGERIAN EXCEPTIONALISM: WHAT EXCEPTIONALISM? through NIGERIAN EXCEPTIONALISM: MYTH OR REALITY?; NIGERIAN EXCEPTIONALISM: CHASING A SHADOW, NIGERIAN EXCEPTIONALISM: CHASING THE RAINBOW; NIGERIAN EXCEPTIONALISM: VICTORY OF HOPE OVER EXPERIENCE. The variants are endless. These varieties tell their own stories as they reflect the swing in my mood from pessimism to optimism and then back again to pessimism.

It is either courage or sheer lunacy

POST Trump Election: New American IMMIGRANTS meet on Nov 29 to re-strategise

A collaborative meeting of new Americans’ Community leaders in Columbus and central Ohio will hold on Tuesday, November 29 to discuss the 2016 Presidential post-election issues including challenges and threats. The meeting is expected to begin at 5pm at ETSS conference room on 1060 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43203.

Dr Seleshi Asfaw
According to the facilitator of the New Americans leaders’ Collaborative meeting, Dr Seleshi Ayelew Asfaw, Executive Director of the Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services, ETSS, “We want to have a meeting in regards to post- election challenges and threats to our community. This meeting will bring together some key community leaders, members, business owners and religious leaders.
“If those issues and threats are not reported to the Police, there is no statistics that such a community has been harassed by a group, so that the Police and other safety and security organizations can protect us. Our people don’t know how to report it. We want to hear what our children are facing at school and in work places.
“We are going to invite from the Homeland security and the Police so that they will listen to us, and the challenges we are facing,” he said.
Dr Seleshi Asfaw noted that, “there are so many, millions of Americans, they love refugee immigrants to work with them and do business with them. They know the value the refugee immigrants have brought to the city of Columbus and central Ohio. But we know that few people, less than one percent, are misguided and with misinformation, really don’t understand what refugee immigrants are facing, why they left their countries.
He described “the New Americans Community leaders’ Collaborative meeting as a forum where different new Americans, leaders, civic associations, non-profit organizations come together and discuss our issues and challenges new Americans are facing. This has been on since August 2014.
“When they arrived here, they are impacted, they contribute, bring more resources, start businesses, and they hire more people with statistics. But those people with hate agenda don’t get this kind of information for lack of information and understanding.
“As new Americans we want to come together and make an agenda and let the message to go to the general public. We have to start education in our neighborhoods and communities,” he added.

Traveling Solo in California’s Romantic Napa Valley

“Oh you’ll just love Napa. It’s beautiful. Romantic. Is someone meeting you there?”

Trapped beneath the weight of her gaze I stood silent, amazed at how a simple inflection could lend whole new meanings to the word. Someone. As in the word before special. As in the euphemism for boyfriend. As in partner. Lover. Fiancé. Future live-in sperm donor.

Soyinka & Trump's illegitimate kids

By Louis Odion, FNGE

This must be a depressing hour indeed for the man who “fashioned the drama of existence” and first black Nobel prizewinner in Literature, Professor Wole Soyinka. A comment uttered in what could only be a protest against the willful trampling on the dignity of the African immigrants and other "underdogs" has, alas, been twisted out of its moral joint and now forms the singsong of some idle parrots, the horde of little minds, barricading the social media.
