Otunba Olawanle Akinboboye has released his 22nd Tourism Product of the Week; The World’s Longest Pool with a Palm Wine Bar. The tourism icon noted that the product is the perfect example of taking ‘advantage of your advantages’ as it leverages off a popular man - made water feature, then ensures it is ‘unusual’ due to its size and the inclusion of distinctive African feature - a palm wine bar.

He explained that, to attract tourists, you must create unique attractions that leverage off those things that are peculiar to your environment. Such attractions must not only be seen as novel by tourists, but must also be challenging to replicate in any other part of the world. This will ensure that the tourist realises it is only by visiting your destination that he/she can fully experience the attraction.

Obviously, nature provides many geographical features that have evolved into popular tourist attractions. This includes the Grand Canyon in the USA, the Niagara Falls in Canada and Mount Kilamanjiro in Tanzania. These features cannot be replicated, which is why, even if it was possible to recreate the Grand Canyon in Dubai, it would have little or no impact on tourists’ desire to see the authentic natural feature in the USA.

The same applies in those situations where culture is the focal point of a tourist attraction. The Maoris of New Zealand have created a sizeable tourism industry that leverages off their cultural identity and beliefs.

Thousands of tourists pay sizeable sums to visit New Zealand and witness an authentic Haka, where tribal Maoris give visitors a taste of the war dances that symbolize their pride in their tribal identity. The same applies in Bali where it’s traditional culture provides a platform for its thriving tourist industry.

Otunba Akinboboye believes there must be a concerted effort to ensure that our food and drink can live side by side and compete with Western products. He said he was particularly excited to find a popular supermarket chain in the UK offered a range of frozen African foods.

Otunba Akinboboye mentioned that, by creating the world’s longest (swimming) pool he took advantage of the vast land space in Africa, as under normal circumstances it would be challenging for a Resort to earmark the land space required for the longest pool to a single feature in a Resort. He then mentioned that, by attaching and incorporating a palm wine bar to this pool, he was leveraging off a drink that was indigenous to our people and which was not readily available outside of the continent.

In particular, even if a Resort in, for example, California wanted to replicate the longest pool it would find it challenging to install a palm wine bar due to the logistical problems in obtaining a consistent supply of freshly tapped palm wine to serve in that bar. It would also be difficult, if not impossible, to get palm wine tappers to tap the palmwine and bring it freshly tapped to a Californian Resort in Gourds, as by the time it crossed the Atlantic the fermentation process would have progressed.

It is all of these elements that make the product uniquely African and ensures that when a tourist wants an African experience his eyes will turn towards an African destination.

Otunba Akinboboye mentioned that tourists are welcomed to enjoy this product at La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort in Ikegun Lagos State which caters for tourists and fun seekers on Staycations or Daycations.

He also made it clear that he is supportive of palm wine being exported and entering the repertoire of international alcoholic drinks, as this would create employment and address the yearnings of Nigerians and other Africans in the diasporas to have a taste of home.

We hope you enjoyed hearing about this product and that you are looking forward to hearing about the remaining 30 products that will feature as Tourism Products of the Week.
Paul Ukpabio's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08458473320944375243noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6830561289427613337.post-19017347369015158522024-03-09T20:15:00.000+01:002024-03-09T20:16:02.106+01:00GOV.

Written By Bolaji Israel

The city of Lagos, with its ever-increasing population and bustling economic activities, faces significant environmental challenges. With the ever-growing influx of people from all over the country into Lagos daily in search for greener pasture, coupled with the volume of businesses, manufacturing, trading activities and human movements around the state, it is understandable that its environmental challenges would be humongous and multidimensional.

Dirty markets, littered streets, blocked drainages due to indiscriminate waste disposal and plastic wastes and homeless miscreants squatting all around the state bridges, would readily have been the disgusting optics in the absence of proactive management and control.

However, the state government, particularly the current administration, is sparing no efforts in its renewed bid to safeguard the environment and ensure a clean and healthy city for residents to live and thrive.

Lagos, which has a population of over 20 million is projected to hit 32.6 million by 2050, and over 80 million by 2100, according to Global Cities Institute at the University of Toronto.

As the state evolves into a full-scale modern city befitting of its status, the government cannot afford to do less or rest on its oars. In fact, all residents and stakeholders must join hands with in the fight to maintain a conducive environment critical for sustainable living.

Just recently, in a bold move to halt further environmental violation in the area, the Lagos State Government dislodged scores of illegal squatters and miscreants residing under Ijora Bridge.

The commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab had reiterated that the exercise was aimed at addressing issues of gross environmental abuse, perpetrated by the illegal squatters, adding that the government would leave no stone unturned in restoring sanity to the environment across the metropolis.

At the core of the campaign for a clean and healthy environment is Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, the government agency which plays a crucial role in both the proactive and daily management of environmental issues in the state, as well as enforcements against recalcitrant violators through its enforcement team.

Earlier in January, residents woke up to the cheering news of a total ban on the usage and distribution of styrofoam packs and other single use plastics by the government.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-22249" title="Lagos, LAWMA And The Battle Against Filth 3" plastics, especially the non-biodegradable styrofoam was causing on the environment, as most drainage channels in the state are daily clogged, with a larger chunk of littering across major roads and markets attributed to same Styrofoam, despite the regular cleaning and evacuation of the drains with humongous resources.

Furthermore, Oke-Afa, Isolo and Katangua Markets, in the Abule Egba area, were also sealed in January for violating waste disposal regulations and for sundry unhygienic practices, constituting grave environmental infractions.

Wahab had charged that: “The government has not jettisoned its zero tolerance for waste and the only way for markets and traders, is to engage in decent and civilised waste disposal practices as outlined by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) as any market or facility that runs foul will face sanctions”.

Last November, the government reopened the Mushin main market, Ojuwoye, Awolowo, Irepodun and Daleko markets in the densely populated Mushin area of the state, after the traders made amends to correct widespread environmental infractions, including indiscriminate waste dumping.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-12079" title="Lagos, LAWMA And The Battle Against Filth 4" last October as they were all sealed but reopened only after complying with environmental standards as stipulated by the government.

Similarly, an Environmental Special Offences Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, last November handed down fines and community service penalties, to over 100 environmental offenders, found guilty of indiscriminate <a presiding magistrate underscored the gravity of the offences and impact on the environment, subsequently imposing a fine of ₦30,000 on each offender, with an option of six hours of community service, in designated areas like the General Hospital, Odan, and Tinubu Market in Lagos Island.

Beyond shutting markets and punishing violators, dialogue, awareness and other engagements, have also been well explored by the government and its core environmental agencies especially LAWMA.

Determined to instil a positive environmental consciousness in the younger generation, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), last November, went on a sensitisation mission to pupils of Otto Primary School, Otto, Lagos Mainland, on proper waste management, with emphasis on recycling, as a source of personal revenue.

The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, who led the team, addressed the pupils on the importance of proper waste management, noting that the exercise was part of the Authority’s environmental sustainability initiatives, to instill responsible waste management practices in children.

He said; “I am glad to be among you all today. In LAWMA you mean so much to us and that is why we have deemed it fit to visit your school first, being the closest to us here in Otto. Diseases like malaria, diarrhoea and the like, thrive in environments that are unkempt and polluted with activities like littering, reckless waste dumping, and open defecation and so on. To avoid all of these, it behoves you to do what is right by disposing of your waste properly into the waste bins’’, he stressed.

As the 3-week moratorium before the enforcement of total ban on styrofoam packs endures, LAWMA has held a consultative meeting with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), where it discussed ways of implementing sustainable waste management strategies, in view of the latest developments.

Addressing the stakeholders, managing director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin reiterated the Authority’s commitment to the Lagos State Government’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus agenda, stressing that the state government had to ban Styrofoam to protect the environment and safeguard public health.

Gbadegesin, said the Authority would continue to place premium on establishing a cleaner and healthier environment, promising to continue to identify and address environmental challenges across the state, and to work tirelessly, to make Lagos a cleaner, more sustainable city.

On the overall, the government’s holistic approach signals a responsible, coordinated and proactive leadership in the state, helping to assure of conducive environment for all and sundry and preventing environmental disasters caused by poor hygiene and related habits.

No serious government should allow actions that can jeopardise citizens health and safety, and the state government has shown through its continued actions, that it could walk the talk and would not hesitate to take decisive measures to protect the environment and safeguard lives and properties of over 22 million residents.

- Culled from: theconscience.com

Paul Ukpabio's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08458473320944375243noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6830561289427613337.post-78781232757348487212024-02-08T12:22:00.003+01:002024-02-08T12:29:35.857+01:00Nigeria’s Vice President, In Celebration With Super Eagles

For the sake of NANTA's young generation, it is important to highlight here that NANTA founding fathers, Chief Jerry Nwosu, Rex Udo, Babatunde Akala and Tunde Johnson, were exceptional characters who nurtured and insisted that all Nigerian iata registered Travel agents must have equal rights and opportunities to trade, and so fought off elitism in its ranks and file.

These leaders, of which late Jerry Nwosu and Babatunde Akala( still alive) were sworn enemies of elitism in all ramifications in NANTA and helped to championed a return to founding ideals which brought NANTA both local and international attention.

Until recently, NANTA was the only travel and tourism industry association in Nigeria, with visible engaging relationships with federal aviation and tourism authorities, and indeed, for many years, key board member of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) now NTDA.

Not withstanding the changes in the board of management of NTDA, NANTA has foraged robustly into other emerging government agencies in culture, hospitality, and travel trade bearing oversight authorities, and opened up training and retraining exposure, and also defining collaborative ecosystems, helpful to the future survival of its members.

Soji Amusan, one its former president (2003 to 2006), a Lufthansa Airlines trained expert and a disciplinarian to the core, once told me that NANTA will continue to be relevant to her members and to Nigerians at large, if it could conduct its affairs by obeying and trading according to extant regulations on the down stream aviation sector and also through knowledge and training empowerment of its members to various support opportunities in the economy.

So apart from effectively enthroning egalitarianism, what else will shape the voting patterns at the April elective Annual General Meeting slated for lagos?

Will the North exit NANTA any time soon?

In ilorin, 199I, it took the wisdom and right political understanding by the then out going president of NANTA (1998 to1991), Mr Femi Adefope to wade off pressures to remain in office by certain hawks in the system who wanted him to continue after serving his two terms tenure. Indeed, there are no NANTA known electoral guideline zoning NANTA Presidency, however the foundation of egalitarianism which the early founders adhered and believed, led Adefope, a fine gentleman to insist without fear or favour and rightly handed to Alhaji Munzali Dantata (1991 to 1993 ) as the first president of NANTA from Northern Nigeria.

Munzali Dantata who gave NANTA presidency his all as a young, energetic and very rich travel trade operator, and owner, was later to become Director, General, National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Studies( NIHOTOUR). Dantata also did not forget good done to him to become nanta president when, nanta members from the north ran to him as then DG, Nihotour to kelp facilitate their breakaway from the association due to certain alleged overbearing tendencies of nanta members in lagos in particular which they considered unhealthy to NANTA's foundation ethos.

That sentiment still lingers and has led the zone into building one of best zonal offices in the history of nanta, a development many observers see as part of a cultural rehearsal to cut off the umbilical chord with NANTA at the centre in future. Though, South of Nigeria produced presidents such as Tereza Ojo(Ezeobi), Bankole Bernard and Mrs Susan Akporiaye, who continued in the tradition of femi Adefope to ensure trade operators and owners from the North remain as key members of nanta, subsequent elections in nanta may have to address this fear. Apart from Munzali Dantata, Alhaji kabir Malan, currently Board of Trustees chairman, Association Tourism Partners of Nigeria ( Atpn) was a nanta president, ditto Alhaji Aminu Agoha (2012 to 2016). So of 19 presidents of nanta, the North produced only three, the eastern region, one (Jerry Nwosu, 1979 to 1980, credited to have successfully mobilized all Nigerian travel trade professionals to form nata). The rest were from the southwest ( middle west). The current outgoing president, Mrs Susan Akporiaye, is from Oron, Akwa Ibom state, but married to a Delta (mid west) man.

Zonal structure elections

At the time of this report, the North Zone election picture is still hazy. South West ( Ibadan) will possibly run a non opposition election. Babatunde Adesokan is unopposed as he takes vice president slot for the region on a final tenure. Others unopposed are Adegbola olufemi Peter, (financial secretary) Tijjani abdulrogeebboluwatosin (Auditor) Abass lateef Seyi(Tressurer) and Obasa Oyebola St George (Pro).
