BOAT CAPSIZES IN LAGOS, 17 RESCUED, 3 DEAD

A 20-passenger boat (operated by Eda Olaropin/Bayeku Association) heading to Bayeku in Ikorodu from Okeranla in Ajah ran into a submerged object midstream within Okeranla axis.

The boat reportedly capsized. Fortunately 17 passengers were rescued alive while 3 persons, all of whom were women, were confirmed dead. The boat owner is Mr Kasali commander of Bayeku.

"Immediately we were contacted by the Lamgbasa Chairman Mr Asumoc, we deployed the ambulance boat on a rescue mission. The marine police and villagers were met on ground. With the joint efforts of all of us at the scene, 17 persons were rescued alive and two bodies were deposited at the morgue," he said as narrated the incident.

"The search and rescue team  went back this morning to determine what the submerged object was that caused the mishap. It was discovered to be a heap of sand, a consequence of dredging activities," he added.
